Cousins {Rochester MN & Harmony MN Children's Portraits}
September 20, 2011
When Amy first contacted me about doing this session, I sat back and thought, “Do I really want to do this session? EIGHT kids? EIGHT kids running around outside, playing, screaming, jumping?” I called her back and told her I’d do it. (I’ll try anything once!)
Amy and her son only make it back to visit family in Minnesota every few years, so she wanted to make this trip special and document what an afternoon in this extended family looks like. She spent lots of time planning, so we had plenty of props and toys to keep the kids busy. She supplied a parachute, a lawn sprinkler, a golf cart, watermelon and a slightly cranky dog that chased a few of the toddlers. I brought bubbles, umbrellas, kid-sized chairs and a couple of blankets. And the kids tossed in lots of smiles, a few tears and some funny faces.
It was actually kind of fun.
And at the end, we pulled the flag off the house and let the youngest hold it during the last few minutes of daylight before sunset. He and his sister’s daddy is deployed to Kuwait, and the family wanted a special patriotic photo of this little man to send overseas. I didn’t realize it at the time, but this little guy was holding a Buzz Lightyear superhero toy. So he holds a superhero while waiting for one to come home. Keep the faith, little man.
Some exciting news I hinted about on my Facebook page yesterday!
I am beyond thrilled to announce that I will be partnering with La Leche League of Rochester, MN to document and photograph next month’s Big Latch On event!
Big Latch On is a chance to participate in a world-record-holding event. The goal of this event is to break the world record for the number of women breastfeeding simultaneously. Big Latch On events are going on around the world on Saturday, August 6, in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Week 2011, which is always August 1 – 7. What I love about Big Latch On is that it promotes and supports breastfeeding in a fun, nonthreatening way. It’s not a surprise flashmob in a crowded mall or an in-your-face protest event outside an unsupportive business; it’s simply an event for breastfeeding families to participate in while enjoying one another’s company and maybe get a chance to help break a world record!
The event is open to the public at Rochester’s Three Links Park shelter, and all breastfeeding families are welcome to participate. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the Big Latch On starts at 10:30 a.m. and will officially last until 10:31 a.m. That’s right — just one minute! Nursing dyads are free to nurse longer or to begin before that, but only moms and babes nursing from 10:30 to 10:31 will be counted toward the world record.
I’ll be there, documenting the event with my cameras. (Don’t worry, if you don’t want your picture taken while you are nursing, you’ll be given a special name badge to wear so that you and your nursling won’t appear in any images. You’ll still be counted toward the world record, but images of you and your nursling won’t be used).
AND THEN!
After the Big Latch On, I’ll be offering breastfeeding mini sessions!
As a doula and breastfeeding mother myself, supporting breastfeeding families is near and dear to my heart. This is your opportunity to forever capture this amazing time between you and your nursling. Sessions will last 10 minutes, and I’ll artfully and discreetly document you feeding and snuggling your child. For $50, you’ll receive at least 5 images in a private online gallery and a CD containing both printable and web-share versions of your images. You’ll receive a 15% discount on any prints or products you order from your session. And the best part? 15% of ALL session fees and sales from breastfeeding mini sessions will go directly to La Leche League, to help support breastfeeding families in Rochester and around the world.
There are only 10 slots available for breastfeeding mini sessions, and you MUST reserve your time slot and pay in advance. I’ll be doing these breastfeeding mini sessions from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in a shady cove of trees and wildflowers at the edge of Silver Lake, just across the street from the Big Latch On at Three Links Park. Once you’ve reserved your time slot, I’ll send you more information about what to expect during your mini session and afterward.
Can’t make it to the Big Latch On or the breastfeeding mini sessions? I am happy to incorporate breastfeeding images into ANY portrait session I offer (newborn, maternity, child or family sessions) at no extra cost. If you’re interested in JUST breastfeeding portraits, I can spend 30 minutes at your home or other location of your choice capturing 10-15 images. For $150, you’ll get a CD containing high-resolution printable and watermarked web-share versions of all images in your private gallery.
The Joy of Love | Day 14 {rings}
February 15, 2011
An assignment a day for 28 days. The Joy of Love, from Willette Designs.
Today’s assignment: rings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My wedding band.
I lost one of the smaller stones during our honeymoon on a tour of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory. (Somebody got a *really* good pint of ice cream that day!) We later replaced the yellow gold center stone prong with a platinum one. The ring isn’t large or fancy, but it is very high quality, and I think that reflects the general approach my husband and I take to many things in life.
My fingers have swollen with each pregnancy, but after our last baby, the ring fits rather snugly. I don’t wear my ring as often as I would like to, as I fear it will get stuck on my finger and have to be cut off. Irrational, I know. I’m also afraid I’ll scratch my baby with it during the day as I feed or change her. Irrational, again. Thank goodness my hubby is almost always rational!
